Dwyane Wade Has Street Renamed in His Honor in Miami
The city of Miami spent three days over the past weekend celebrating Dwyane Wade amid his jersey retirement with the Miami Heat. But it wasn’t until Monday—when Dwyane and his wife Gabrielle Union-Wade were in Los Angeles for Kobe Bryant’s memorial at Staples Center—that the 38-year-old Chicago native’s adopted hometown went public with the biggest honor of all: a street renamed in his honor.
Mayor Francis Suarez announced that Northeast 7th Street, which runs perpendicular to Biscayne Boulevard near AmericanAirlines Arena, would now be known as Dwyane Wade Boulevard, courtesy of a unanimous resolution from the city council.
The mayor had already awarded Dwyane, whom he described as “the greatest athlete in the history of South Florida,” with an honorary Key to the City. The three-time NBA champion may live and spend much of his time with his family in L.A., but now, he’ll have not one but two permanent markers of his presence in “Wade County.”
Odds are, that number will grow to three someday, whenever the Heat decide to immortalize Dwyane with his own statue.
