Kyrie Irving Replaces Pau Gasol as National Basketball Players Association Vice President
The rest of the 2019-20 NBA season may be in doubt for Kyrie Irving due to a shoulder injury, but his future with the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) is secure. This week, at the players union’s meetings in the Bahamas, the six-time NBA All-Star and the Brooklyn Nets point guard was elected to a three-year term as a Vice President of the NBPA. He will replace Pau Gasol, a two-time champion with the Los Angeles Lakers, on the Executive Committee.
Kyrie was already the Nets’ player representative for this season. Pau, meanwhile, had served on the NBPA’s Executive Committee since February 2017.
"This was the right time for me to run for a leadership position in the NBPA,” Kyrie said. “I have been an observer and a participant in union affairs for a while, but for the most part, I was off on the sidelines, supporting our Executive Committee as they made important decisions. At this point in my career, I wanted to join forces with those guys and take a bigger role outside of the basketball court and within our union. I want to help move the union forward with innovative ideas, not only on social issues but also with business ventures into a new space. I am honored to be elected by my peers and I cannot wait to work with everybody to make an impact."
Kyrie joins an Executive Committee that includes Chris Paul of the Oklahoma City Thunder as President, new Miami Heat forward Andre Iguodala as First Vice President, Anthony Tolliver of the Sacramento Kings as Secretary-Treasurer, and Charlotte Hornets big man Bismack Biyombo, Indiana Pacers guard Malcolm Brogdon, Portland Trail Blazers guard C.J. McCollum, former Boston Celtics teammate Jaylen Brown and current Nets teammate Garrett Temple as Vice Presidents.
