Lakers Legend Magic Johnson Joins Board of Renewable Energy Company, Uncharted Power

Magic Johnson is bringing “Showtime” to the world of renewable energy. The Los Angeles Lakers legend and Basketball Hall of Famer is joining the board of Uncharted Power, an energy technology company founded in 2011 by Nigerian-American Jessica O. Matthews.

Magic will work to strengthen the company’s existing partnerships and expand its services to communities in the United States. The 60-year-old mogul previously participated in Uncharted Power’s $7 million Series A funding round through his venture capital firm, Magic Johnson Enterprises.

“Many of America’s urban, multicultural communities are being left behind when it comes to basic human rights such as feeling safe in the community, providing for family, getting an education and, quite literally, keeping the lights on,” he said in a statement.

Uncharted Power’s investors also include seven current NBA players, though the company has declined to identify them publicly. All told, Uncharted Power has said it has raised $12.5 million to fund its efforts to tap into underserved power markets—including the purported $24 billion potentially available in sub-Saharan Africa.
