Carmelo Anthony Helps to Gift Car to Single Mom in Baltimore

Carmelo Anthony may be best known as a New Yorker, but the Portland Trail Blazers forward has strong ties to Baltimore as well. That’s where he lived from the age of eight until his junior year of high school and, now, where he has at least one more fan thanks to his partnership with gettacar.

According to WMAR-2 in Baltimore, the 10-time NBA All-Star joined forces with the Philadelphia-based startup to deliver a 2017 Mazda CX-3 to Shalita Addison, who lives in Maryland’s largest city. Shalita is a single mother whose daughter, Taylor Addison, is not only a Division I college basketball player at Mount St. Mary's University, but also happens to be a longtime fan of Melo’s.

“We partnered up and gave a car for the holidays,” Carmelo said, per NBC Sports Northwest. “We surprised a family who really needed it, and we made somebody’s holiday. We made a family happy, made some wishes come true. It’s a great feeling when you can do something like that and help a family out. It always put things in perspective when you see the impact that has on people.”

For Shalita, the gifted car comes as a major relief. Her previous car, a 1997 Honda Accord, had become unreliable, to the point where she often missed everything from work and doctor’s appointments to Taylor’s basketball games.

“I’m so grateful," Shalita said. "Sometimes you don’t think that prayer works, but raising her, and then she gets a DI scholarship. Just the odds of that are just, like, you know what I mean? It makes you just keep pursuing your dreams. And sometimes everything doesn’t work out, but they always will.”
