Disney Developing Biopic About Giannis Antetokounmpo for Streaming Service
What do you get a superstar like Giannis Antetokounmpo, who already has an NBA MVP award and is all but certain to receive a max contract extension from the Milwaukee Bucks? Aside from a championship, how about a Disney movie about the “Greek Freak’s” extraordinary life?
According to Deadline, the venerable Hollywood studio is developing a feature film about Giannis’ life for its upcoming streaming service, Disney+. The movie will reportedly recap his remarkable journey, which began in Athens, Greece, as the middle of five sons born to impoverished Nigerian immigrants. Giannis went on to star for Filathlitikos in the third and second divisions of Greek basketball before jumping into the 2013 NBA draft, wherein the Bucks selected him with the No. 15 pick.
This past spring, he declined an offer to appear in Space Jam 2 alongside fellow NBA All-Stars LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Damian Lillard and Klay Thompson, as well as WNBA standouts Diana Taurasi, Nneka Ogwumike and Chiney Ogwumike.
"I don't like being Hollywood," Giannis said, per ESPN. "I don't like all this extra drama. I am just going to try to be me."
In all likelihood, Disney’s production about Giannis’ life won’t require much (if any) on-set participation by the Greek Freak himself. That way, he won’t have to worry about disrupting his strict offseason routines in order for a project based on him to come to life.
